rap music?

I want to listen to rap music.

It's never been a big thing for me, but lately Trav and I are really into rapping whenever we're in the car, as in one of us lays down a crappy beat (usually I do this by clapping, not very rap-like) and then the other one tries to speak fast and rhyme all their phrases.
After every few lines we trade and try to keep going.

It's very strange and super entertaining. But now I want to listen to real rap music, at least kind of.
But I don't know anything about rap, and the only rap Trav listens to is Jurassic and the Beastie Boys.

If you happen to know the names or songs of a rap-maker or two (rap-singer sounds wrong) let us know.
and I know which of you will leave comments telling me rap is stupid and worthless so save your fingers-- you don't need to type it.

Not that I'm an expert but I would suggest starting with the classics, like Run DMC and 2Pac. Then maybe move onto JT, Jay-Z and...The Black Eyed Peas (their old stuff, not so much the new album). I'm not a fan of Kanye West, but he's there. And N.E.R.D is popular, but I don't like scream-o even if it is scream-o rap. Lupe Fiasco is great though.

That was negative! Listen to Ratatat, they have awesome beats and rap artists are featured in many of their songs. It's great.

I've listened to Fergalicious several times now in the last month and it makes me think of you. It's not rap per se but it's a funny song especially when I think of you singing it.

It is all about the beat. I agree with Lana, Ratatat is great. I like the old school, west coast stuff which is why I like Beasty Boys (think Hello Nasty, Intergalactic Planetary) and Jurrasic 5. I also like just the beat stuff too. But all of that other stuff, Jay-Z, Run-DMC is all super crude and demeaning and isn't as good as the west coast stuff. Maybe old Snoop-dawg... I don't know. I am happy with J-5
